What was to be an adult film shoot in rural Texas ends with a fight against the elderly hosts. Mia Goth and Jenna Ortega among others starred in this critically acclaimed slasher. The prequel, ‘Pearl’, was screened in Sitges and the sequel, ‘MaXXXine’, will be seen in 2023.
Miller told a fantastic story about a doctor of literature, Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton), a woman who seems to be happy with her life although she faces the world with a certain skepticism. Suddenly, she encounters a genie (Idris Elba) who offers to grant her three wishes in exchange for her freedom. At first, Alithea refuses to accept the offer since wish-granting always ends badly. He persuades her by telling stories from the past and she finally asks for something that will be a surprise for both of them.
The film, which won Best Film at Venice, is based on the novel by Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux. A suffocating story about how a young university student wishes to terminate an unwanted pregnancy in 1960s France, when abortion is criminalized.
